Cody was walking through the halls after lunch, wandering slightly. He was heading towards the library... or maybe the common room... he wanted to talk to Lia, but he hadn't seen her that day yet. You'd think, in a school this size, that they would see one another more often. Oh well.

Cody continued to wander, wander, wander. What did it mean that he and Lia identified the same tarot card? And why did he find everything he learned about her so fascinating?

Ashleigh, was in an extremely good mood. She hadn't decided what she was going to do during her free period, but she suspected that she would find somewhere to write in her journal. She had an awful lot going through her mind and for the first time in a while, it wasn't negativly based.

As she walked she saw Cody heading in her direction. "Hey Cody!" she called.

Cody stopped in his tracks, startled out of his reverie. "Oh, hi Ashleigh!" he said, grinning. "Good to see you again. Been in trouble?" He laughed. He meant the question in the most positive way imaginable.

Ashleigh was cool, Cody thought. She seemed genuinely nice, and that was important.

Ashleigh raised an eyebrow, almost worried that he had heard something that he would consider trouble. "I dunno. You tell me, have I been in trouble?" She laughed afterward just in case he hadn't actually heard anything. Ha. Ha. Funny. Joke. You are so lame. She smiled. "What are you up to? You looked... distracted." She was so cheerful she was almost bouncing.

"Not that I'm aware of," Cody replied. He smiled wanly, then grinned, saying, "If you're not sure, you must have done something sneaky."

He moved so he wasn't standing across the hall from Ashleigh. "I was just thinking about... someone..." He trailed off. How girly did he sound?! Oh, geeze.

Oh, so he hasn't heard anything. "Well, you know how it is... there was a party... fire whiskey was involved." She laughed. "Somethings can end up bad."

She furrowed her brow a little. "Oh really?" She smiled. "Who were you thinking about?" Ashleigh, herself, couldn't wipe a smile off her face because she was thinking about someone as well. "Someone special?" She hoped he didn't feel as if she was prying. She knew that she felt fondly of the boy, but in reality, she didn't know him all that well.

"Oh," Cody said knowingly. "The party. I thought about going, but, uh, didn't have anyone to go with." He shrugged, and then looked away, abash, at Ashleigh's other question.

"Uh, I guess you could say she's special." Why was he admitting this? Probably because it couldn't get back to Lia. And he was pretty sure that Ashleigh wouldn't judge him -- and may even give some good advice, unlike Tobias who was more likely to give ASSvice.

Ashleigh nodded. "Yeah. I thought about not going too... but I did and there was spin-the... nevermind." She laughed. Ashleigh didn't really want to have to explain who all she had kissed. As a matter of fact, it was hard for her to remember everyone.

Ashleigh raised both eyebrows. "Oh it's a she." She lowered her voice so that passerbys couldn't hear their conversation. "Does she think about you?" She leaned her shoulder against the wall. Yet another smile crossed her face.

"Uh, we're really good friends," said Cody. "We really are. I mean, you know," he stammered. He didn't know what she thought of him, really. "We do homework together all of the time, and we live near each other so we get together on the holidays."

Oh, well, she seemed to really care. A boy needed someone to talk to who wouldn't giggle.

Ashleigh nodded. "So, there's no set title... you're basically just friends." She hoped that she wasn't over stepping her bounds but she had to continue. "Can I go out on a limb and guess that you want more?"

"We're just friends," said Cody vehemently. He was just firm on this point, he didn't want to send the wrong message. "And I told her I want to get to know her better, but I don't think she understood me." He shrugged. "But we have a lot of fun together, so, I don't know."

"I take it that you've actually known each other for a while?" She cocked her head to the side. "If you have known her for a while the comment about getting to know her better could have confused her." Cody seemed to be speaking pretty freely, so she assumed that she could as well.

Oh, that was an angle he hadn't thought of. "True," he said. "God, that was a really cliche line, wasn't it?" he ran his hand through his hair with some dejection. "That was dumb, wasn't it? Oh, merlin," he said. Since when did he say that? Haha, that was such a wizarding expression.

Ashleigh immediately started shaking her head. He was not a stupid boy. "Girls, as a general rule, are hard to understand... it doesn't make you stupid." Although, she wasn't trying to patronize him. "To be honest, the line was a little cliche." She held her fingers a tiny bit apart as a visual example. "That's only because you've known her for a while." She wrinkled her nose. "Have you thought about just coming out and telling her that you like her?" She smiled at the boy.

Cody blanched. Say it? There was no way that she could like him back, despite what Tobias said he wasn't the type of guy that could get girls. "I don't think that would end well."

Ashleigh smiled. "Cody! You're a great guy... you're the knight in shining armor." She paused. "Any girl would be lucky to have you." She thought for a minute. "I know exactly how you must feel." She thought about the past year. "Until recently, I was crushing on someone that I couldn't have." She paused again. "I just don't think that you're in that same position." She wasn't trying to pressure him into something that he didn't want to do, she just wanted him to understand.

Heh, a knight in shining armor. Girls have called him that, sure. He was polite and considerate, like his mother had taught him, but everything he was aware of pointed to girls not liking nice girls, but rather adoring bad boys.

"I don't know," he said. "I guess I could just come out and say it, but... at least we're friends, you know?"

Ashleigh sighed. "I know we're not the best of friends." She stopped for a second, thinking about how to place her words. "I mean, we've just met... but I could talk to her." She ran her fingers through her hair. "You know, test the waters... she how she reacts from a girl's point of view." Yet again, Ashleigh was worried about over stepping her bounds. "I can understand that you don't want to destroy what you have by trying to get more." She winked. "I can just be a curious girl... not a big deal."

"No," said Cody. "But, you know, thanks." He shook his head. He didn't want to freak out Lia any more than he had to. "I appreciate the offer, but knowing Lia... it wouldn't work."

Really, he didn't know where he stood, and he didn't want to force his hand. He was a Slytherin, he could be patient. He could.

"So, rescued any damsels lately?" she questioned, trying to lighten the mood.

Cody laughed. "Uh, no. There weren't any damsels around, I don't think. Did I miss one?" He smiled and scratched his nose, to cover up the fact that he was pushing up his glasses.

Ashleigh looked around the hall. "Well, the hall is kinda empty... but I could damsel." She laughed.

"So, you still doing the whole ball thing?" She made a kicking motion with her foot. In all honesty, she couldn't remember exactly what it was called but between the 'ball' and foot motion, he'd get it.

Cody laughed. "Football? Yeah, I do." He smirked. "It looks like you'd have a good hook. Would you like to learn to play? You know, you could use it to skive off class when it's nice outside."

Ashleigh nodded. "Oh, I'd love to learn. I don't know if I'd be any good." She smiled. "I'm willing to try though." She found it very amusing that he was still offering to teach her to blow off classes; she needed it though. Quidditch had never appealed to her; of course her fear of heights helped that; maybe this ground ball would be better for her.

"Shall we set a date?" asked Cody, laughing at his terminology. She would know that he was kidding, he was sure -- after all, they had just had a conversation about the girl he was crushing on, and she admitted a crush herself. "Some day soon?"

He thought about it. Really, they could just kick the ball around, and he would go easy on her.

She thought about it, wondering if she would have plans. Ashleigh decided that anything could be worked around a ground football lesson. "Sounds great." She gave him a big smile. "I'm suddenly really excited about this." She realized that she probably sounded really silly. Oh yeah... you're ALL excited. Merlin. Lame. The truth was, she was excited; this was a sport she could play on the ground.
